The Trapped Bus
The trainee priests, all of them kids, had travelled to the great Kumbha fair, all the way from their hostel in Varanasi. While they performed the Homas and chanted Vedic Hymns at the mela, their old ricktey bus sand slowly in the soft sand of the vast Gangetic floodplains which host the largest congregation of humanity ever, a record that gets re-written every 12 years. By the time they were done their religious deities and were ready to return to the holy city, their ancient bus was completely trapped by the millions of particles of sand, the remains of rocks and glacial flour that the Ganges brings down from her Himalayan home. While they waited, chatted, planned, pushed and dug, I photographed. They finally left by late evening.
